CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

 

 

           Purpose

Teach professional rescuers (those with a duty to respond) the skills needed to respond appropriately to respiratory and cardiac emergencies.  Make participants familiar with the use of automated external defibrillators for victims of cardiac arrest and how to safely operate the device

           Prerequisites

None

           Learning Objectives

Learn the roll of the professional rescuer in the EMS system. 

Learn the responsibilities and characteristics of a professional rescuer. 

Understand legal considerations that affect the professional rescuer. 

Learn the role of the professional rescuer in providing emergency care. 

Learn how to recognize and respond to respiratory and cardiac emergencies in infants, children and adults. 

Recognize the risk factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease. 

Perform specialized skills and techniques used by professional rescuers.  

Describe the rational for early defibrillation. 

Describe the abnormal heart rhythms commonly present during cardiac arrest.  

Explain what defibrillation is and how it works. 

Discuss when defibrillation is appropriate and when it is not. 

Identify the general steps for the use of an automated external defibrillator. 

List precautions for the use of an automated external defibrillator. 

Demonstrate how to properly use an automated external defibrillator in a cardiac arrest situation.  

           Length

Approximately 8 hours.

           Certification Requirements

Attend all class sessions. 

Successfully complete all skills outlined in the course. 

Pass a written test with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better for all components.

           Certification

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate valid for one year.
